Hello, and welcome to CMBlog.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on finding this website. I'm not sure how you found it (it's not supposed to be in any search engine listings yet), but regardless, welcome. We're glad you're here.

So, what am I looking at?

CMBlog is a blogging tool, much like the famed Blogger or LiveJournal. The difference? Well, CMBlog tries to merge the better features of each of these into one tool.

It's still in heavy development and, as such, there is not much to be said about it (yet). If you really want to jump in and get posting (or reading, or anything, really), it would probably be best to go to the previous version of CMBlog, since it's actually functional. Still, be advised, CMBlog is an ALPHA-quality product - not fit for any use beyond testing.

That said, you can still play around with it, and see what this version will be like. And this version is in active development, so even if you find nothing but fatal errors today, do come back tomorrow - you might find everything working! However, if you're missing a feature, or if it's been (in your opinion) too long since anything new appeared on the site, or even if you just feel something's not quite right, feel free to drop me a line! Eventually, I may create a mailing list, to keep everyone up to date (depends if I get a lot of people I need to e-mail at a time), but for now I'll personally make sure to e-mail anyone who asks for status updates or would like to inquire about a specific feature. So don't be shy, your feedback could mean the difference between an okay application and an excellent one. Mail me.

Okay, enough marketing-speak, what can I do on CMBlog?

Right now? Sadly, very little. As I mentioned earlier, this version of CMBlog is in active development, meaning I'm writing more and more of it all the time. Today, there is very little to it - nothing more than the page you're looking at right now. Tomorrow, who knows? I certainly don't.

Allow me to emphasize again (unless you're getting tired of me saying it, in which case, feel free to skip over this paragraph) that there's already a working version of CMBlog, and the LiveStats (?) are pulled from the same database, as will the rest of the content be in this version of CMBlog. And since both versions use EPRU (?), you can use the exact same login information in both places (if you could log in to this version of CMBlog you could, that is).

As you browse CMBlog, you'll find a lot of links (actually, all of them) lead to nothing but error pages. This is normal for this version of CMBlog. The other one works better (i.e. actually works).

But what's the point? Why make CMBlog?

That's actually a very good question. In order, we're making CMBlog:

  • because we can
  • because we think it's worth the effort
  • because we want more experience in making Web applications
  • finally, because programming is fun!

By the way, what we really need right now are users who are willing to help us test CMBlog. So if you'd like to help out, send me a message. I'll get back to you as soon as possible, but let me tell you right now: your assistance will be much appreciated.

Right, that's enough for now. This page will be updated whenever large changes in CMBlog are made (almost daily). Happy blogging!

(email) Narc's update 2005/11/03 (November 11th, 2005)

Okay, development has been paused for the last few weeks as I forced myself to worry more about school and... other matters... but now it's time to focus on this again (finally). The next bit to be added will be the blogs list, the first step in replicating the abilities of the original version. I'm still uncertain whether to have a "list" view and reuse it for blogs, posts and comments, or to have three separate "listblogs", "listposts" and "listcmnts" views. I've started work assuming I'll use the former, but that could change at any time. I also think I'll need to set up some mod_rewrites later on, to allow access to posts using some more memorable URLs, but that can (and will) wait until the app is mostly done - it's not really a difficult part of the job.

One other thing I'm working on resolving is navigation. Now, I knew when I came into this that navigation in the original version was not the best in the world (that's an understatement), but I wasn't sure how to resolve it. So far, the idea I've come up with involves using the bar at the top as a navbar. The first line will contain useful links such as "Main Page", "Search" and "Preferences", and the second line will have links back towards this page through each of the important ones (Main Page > Blogs List > Some Blog Or Other > Some Post Or Other), and the login/logout links on the right. This may or may not work out. We'll see.

On a different note, I should remember to implement CMWhatIs(?) as soon as possible.
